Developing Finance Careers with Southern Spars


Southern Spars is a New Zealand owned manufacturing company specialising in the manufacture of a range of tailor-made products in the yachting and marine industry. They pride themselves on continually pushing technology beyond its accepted limits and regularly leading the spar industry in rig developments. They are a truly global company, with an enviable reputation for the highest quality products and service.

Southern Spars manufacturing facilities cover over 9000m2 and are based in Auckland.

Growing globally with operations in the US, Asia, Europe and South Africa, the CFO was looking to appoint two high-calibre, up-and-coming accountants into his finance team. The CFO had a very firm idea of what he was looking for and did not have the time to sift through 100’s of CV’s. He wanted quality candidates in a short space of time. The roles he was recruiting were a Management Accountant and a Graduate Accountant (to report into the Management Accountant).

He had reached out to his networks (for the Management Accountant role) and advertised directly (for the Graduate Accountant) – receiving an extraordinarily large number of CVs for this role.


1 Management Accountant role: Adam Napper went straight to his network of candidates who he thought would be suitable for the role in terms of background, and stage of their careers. An interview was swiftly arranged for Daniel Malherbe and an offer of employment was made in a matter of days after completing referencing and psych tests.

2 Graduate Accountant role: Rebecca Smith contacted Southern Spars to see if they would be interested in saving the extensive time required to screen these CVs, by interviewing some of the candidates we had recently met – all of whom were interviewed, with academic transcripts on file (B+ minimum). Interviews were set up quickly, and from these Kate Bollam emerged as the preferred candidate. Kate started at Southern Spars in May 2013.

Both processes took place with speed and a quality pool of candidates due to farrowjamieson having engaged and interviewed these candidates previously. Neither role needed to be advertised as we were already working with the candidates in question.


Daniel and Kate have been presented with exceptional opportunities to develop their careers with a highly successful, growing Kiwi-owned business. The CFO is now based off-shore (though still accessible) in the expanding US office, meaning there is space for Daniel and Kate to grow and develop in both the short and long term. Daniel and Kate are both very happy with the decision to join Southern Spars. It is one of the most satisfying aspects of our jobs as recruiters to see people happy and growing in the roles they have moved into. It is a great example of a successful, New Zealand-owned business who are growing internationally, and offering opportunities for career development in a number of areas, not just accounting.
